Web design has been an extremely popular course in high school. For teachers to take advantage of this popularity they need to be able to use the latest web design software. The advanced web class will give teachers the skills they need to challenge their students to create the next level of interactive, educational web sites that have become popular. Student motivation increases and students’ skills become more marketable when they use the latest software.
Class Overview
The first several sessions will be spent working with Dreamweaver. Working with both the visual design tools and the code view to create fully functional non-graphical web pages that make use of the latest HTML and CSS tricks and techniques. In addition participants will work with the site management tools and learn non-application specific templates and include files. Participants will then be introduced to Fireworks, and creating images that increase the visual appeal of their pages. In Fireworks we will cover optimization, work with vector and raster formats and create interactive images and menu systems. All the material learned will then be applied to their existing pages. The remaining sessions will be spent learning Flash and integrating all of the programs to create a professional portfolio will showcase their work. Teachers will be able to mirror the instruction-portfolio model in their own classrooms, having the students create cutting-edge portfolios of their work, increasing student pride and marketability in the web design and graphic arts fields.
Although we will be using the Macromedia suite of web development programs the majority of the lessons will be non-program specific, allowing participants to take the material learned and use it in the program or application of their choice. The focus will be on designing excellent web sites.
